NIKKA WHISKY

It all began with a vision. Nikka Founder Masataka Taketsuru went abroad to Scotland in 1918 to learn distillation, and became the first Japanese person to truly master whisky production. After being contracted to make the first Japanese Whisky Distillery (Yamazaki), Masataka continued to work at Yamazaki for 10 years, before branching off to start his on line of whisky.

In 1934 he went north and built his first distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, a place he had always considered to be the ideal site for him to make whisky. The environmental conditions of Yoichi were in many ways similar to those of Scotland with a cool climate, crisp air and appropriate humidity. The company first started producing apple products under the name of “Dai Nippon Kaju”, meaning the “Great Japanese Juice Company” while he was preparing to produce whisky.

In 1936 the first pot still designed by Masataka and made in Japan was installed and started distillation. Finally in 1940 the first whisky from Nikka was launched. The brand name of this whisky was “NIKKA WHISKY”, short for “Nippon Kaju”, which later became the name of the company itself.

We will be trying The Taketsuru Pure Malt, the Nikka Coffey Grain & Malt, Yoichi Single Malt & Miyagikyo Single Malt from the Nikka Collection.

NOMAD BREWING:

‘A long time ago in a country far, far away (well, Italy) a love affair blossomed. It was a relationship between Global Top 100 brewer, Leonardo Di Vincenzo and Kerrie & Johnny Latta, a husband and wife team from the Northern Beaches, owners of Australia’s largest craft beer distributors, Experience IT beverages.’

‘After endless travel, negotiation and plenty of beers, the guys managed to persuade Brooks Carretta, Leonardo’s brewing protege at Birra Del Borgo to pull up stumps and make the journey down under to Brookvale. He had two conditions: To never be restricted by fashions and trends and to use Australia’s amazing native ingredients.’

‘We Nomads continue to be restless creatures, driven by discovery of new tastes, beer knowledge, experiences and the people that make craft beer great. But no matter where we roam, the best journey is always the one home.’
